French Barometer and Société des Lunetiers History Added
A late 19th-century French aneroid barometer has joined the collection, accompanied by a new history of the Société des Lunetiers.
A new French open-dial aneroid barometer, dating from around 1890–1900, has been added to the collection. Although its dial prominently bears the name Fremy, Bruxelles, it also carries the distinctive SL emblem of the Société des Lunetiers, providing an interesting example of the commercial links between French instrument suppliers and Belgian retailers at the end of the 19th century.
Alongside the new instrument, the Brands section has been expanded with a detailed history of the Société des Lunetiers, one of France’s most important optical and scientific-instrument organisations. The new article follows the company from its 19th-century origins and development as a major cooperative enterprise through its extensive production and commercial activities and the later evolution of the business.
Together, the two additions provide further context for understanding not only who made historical instruments, but also the networks of manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers through which they reached their owners.
