Japy Frères Floral Cast-Iron Aneroid Barometer Joins the Collection
A decorative French aneroid barometer by Japy Frères, dating from around 1880, has been added to the collection.
The collection has been expanded with a Floral Cast-Iron Aneroid Barometer, manufactured around 1880 by the renowned French clockmaking company Japy Frères.
The instrument features an elaborate cast-iron case skilfully finished to resemble carved wood, with floral ornamentation, prominent scrolls, and a large rose at its crown. Its brass-framed dial carries Dutch weather indications and a traditional mercury pressure scale, while the movement employs a corrugated aneroid capsule and a delicate fusee-chain transmission.
Combining decorative craftsmanship with 19th-century barometric technology, the instrument may originally have formed part of a matching interior set with a wall clock.
