Early Casella Aneroid Barometer Joins the Collection
A rare Casella Brass Drum Aneroid Barometer from around 1870 has joined the collection, accompanied by an expanded history of the renowned London instrument maker Casella.
We are pleased to introduce a new addition to the collection: a Casella Brass Drum Aneroid Barometer, manufactured around 1870 by Louis Casella of London, a distinguished maker of scientific instruments and supplier to the British Admiralty and Ordnance departments.
Bearing the relatively early serial number 1437, this fine Victorian instrument features a substantial brass drum-shaped case with a beautifully aged golden lacquer finish, an elegant silvered dial, and an unusual curved mercury thermometer. Its traditional aneroid mechanism incorporates a C-shaped steel spring, a system of brass levers, and a delicate fusee-chain transmission.
Alongside this acquisition, we have significantly expanded our existing history of Casella and his company, providing further insight into the firm’s development, its contributions to scientific and meteorological instrumentation, and its place in the history of British precision instrument-making.
The new barometer and the expanded company history are now available to explore on our website.
