A Hunter Case Pocket Thermometer by Carl Emil Rose Joins the Collection
A Mellenbach hunter case pocket thermometer with compass, made around 1890, has been added to the collection together with a detailed history of its maker.
The collection has gained a made around 1890 by , Thermometer-, Barometer- & Glasinstrumentenfabrik, of Mellenbach in Thuringia. The instrument looks like a pocket watch, with a nickel-plated brass case, a hinged lid with a red fabric lining and a suspension ring, but it holds a horseshoe-shaped mercury thermometer with a Fahrenheit scale and a small compass in the centre of the dial. The lid of the case is engraved with a buckled garter, a motif that would have appealed to the British buyers the Fahrenheit scale was made for.
