A Carpenter & Westley Barometer and Company History Added

A rare Ivory Register-Plate Cistern Barometer, made by Carpenter & Westley in London around 1850, has been added to the collection. Its detailed catalogue entry is accompanied by a newly published history of the celebrated Regent Street firm, best known for optical instruments, kaleidoscopes and phantasmagoria lanterns.

A new instrument has been added to the collection: an Ivory Register-Plate Cistern Barometer, made by the London firm of Carpenter & Westley around 1850. Alongside its detailed catalogue description, the website now includes an extensively researched history of the company, tracing its development from the work of Philip Carpenter to the later activities of the Carpenter & Westley partnership.

Although Carpenter & Westley is remembered primarily for optical instruments and visual entertainments, the newly added barometer reveals another important aspect of the firm’s business. From its premises at 24 Regent Street, the company supplied a remarkably broad range of scientific, optical, mathematical and meteorological instruments. Its catalogues and advertisements offered spectacles, telescopes, microscopes, kaleidoscopes, camera lucidas, camera obscuras, projection apparatus, thermometers and barometers, as well as the phantasmagoria lanterns and dissolving-view equipment for which the name became especially well known.

The barometer is a full-sized mercury cistern instrument housed in an elongated solid-oak case of the type traditionally known as a stick barometer. Its widened, arched head contains two engraved ivory register plates, whose material can be identified by the characteristic intersecting Schreger lines visible on their surfaces. The right-hand plate carries a barometric scale graduated from 27 to 31 London inches of mercury, together with the familiar weather indications FAIR, CHANGE, RAIN and STORMY.

The accompanying company history places the instrument within the much broader story of Carpenter & Westley. The business originated with Philip Carpenter, an inventive Birmingham optician and scientific-instrument maker whose activities included microscopes, magic lanterns, painted projection slides and improved forms of the kaleidoscope. After his death, the enterprise was continued by members of his family and by William Westley, eventually becoming the firm known as Carpenter & Westley.

Under that name, the company occupied a distinctive position between scientific instrument making, education, retail trade and public entertainment. Its lanterns and carefully produced slide series transformed astronomy, natural history, travel, religious subjects and theatrical illusion into projected spectacles. Moving slides, chromatrope effects and dissolving views placed the firm within the technological and visual culture that preceded modern cinema.

At the same time, instruments such as this barometer demonstrate that Carpenter & Westley should not be understood solely as makers of optical entertainments. The company also participated fully in the London trade in practical scientific and measuring instruments. The combination of an accurate mercury system, dual-scale thermometer, ivory registers, vernier index and transportable cistern reflects the technical sophistication expected from a leading metropolitan instrument supplier of the mid-nineteenth century.

Together, the new catalogue entry and the expanded company history connect a single surviving object with the people, workshops, advertisements and commercial networks behind it. The barometer is therefore more than an atmospheric measuring instrument: it is a material document of Victorian precision, craftsmanship and the unusually varied world of Carpenter & Westley.
