glass, wood
This wall-mounted household thermometer from the mid-20th century was produced by the German company Möller & Co., known for manufacturing reliable domestic and educational thermometers. The base is made of warm-toned walnut with neatly profiled top and bottom sections, giving the instrument a finished and decorative appearance. The wood is smoothly polished, emphasizing the clean vertical composition.
At the center is a slender glass alcohol thermometer, visually reminiscent of an enlarged medical thermometer, but intended for measuring ambient air temperature. The Celsius scale (0–50 °C) is printed on a flat internal backing plate positioned behind the glass tube. The 0-degree mark is highlighted in red, while the remaining numbers and divisions are rendered in black.
Due to the enlarged size of the reservoir and the extended height of the scale, the readings are exceptionally easy to see. The tall scale markings and strong visual contrast allow the temperature to be read clearly even from several meters away. This makes the instrument particularly convenient in household interiors: it can be mounted in a hallway, living room, or near a window, with readings remaining easily visible without needing to approach closely.
Designed for wall mounting in domestic spaces, hallways, studies, or winter gardens, the thermometer combines practical measurement accuracy with decorative appeal. The pairing of wood and glass allows it to function both as a useful household tool and as an understated element of interior design.
