Möller Therm was founded in 1964 in the town of Kreuzwertheim, Lower Franconia, Bavaria. According to the regional register, the company was formally incorporated later, on October 30, 1980, as a limited liability company (Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung, GmbH) registered in the Würzburg Trade Register under the number HRB 4611. There is a noteworthy coincidence, since in the same year 1964 another thermometer company — TFA (Technische Fabrik für Armaturen) — was established in Kreuzwertheim by Heinz Dostmann. As stated on TFA’s official website, the region at that time attracted numerous young glass-processing enterprises, drawn by the Wertheim glassworks, founded in 1950 by glass experts who had migrated from Thuringia. Thus, Möller Therm began its activity in the mid-20th century as a manufacturer of thermometers based in Kreuzwertheim.
The company’s founder was Hartmut Möller, whose surname gave the firm its name. Initially, it was a family-run private workshop specializing in the production of glass thermometers. In 1980, it was reorganized into Möller Therm GmbH with a registered capital of 60,000 Deutsche Marks. Since its founding, the company has remained privately owned by the Möller family. In the 2000s, management gradually passed to the second generation — in 2016, the position of managing director was transferred from Hartmut Möller to Yvonne Möller.
Development and evolution
1964 – start of thermometer production in Kreuzwertheim (a small family workshop). 1980 – official registration as Möller Therm GmbH, formalizing the business structure. 1981 – a major event: on November 23, a fire completely destroyed the Möller-Therm factory building in Kreuzwertheim, after which the company was rebuilt and operations resumed.
In the following decades, the company expanded its product range — from traditional glass thermometers to barometers, hygrometers, and more complex meteorological instruments, later adding electronic measuring devices. The company name remained unchanged: since its foundation, it has been known under the Möller Therm brand. In the 1990s, the firm became recognized for its motto “Das Maß aller Dinge” (“The Measure of All Things”), emphasizing the precision of its instruments. In the 2000s, management was transferred to the second generation (with Elisabeth Möller as director from 2002–2016, followed by Yvonne Möller since 2016). The company remained an independent family manufacturer, avoiding acquisitions or name changes.
From its inception, Möller Therm belonged to a regional cluster of thermometer and glass-instrument makers that developed around the Wertheim glassworks. In the 1950s, glass specialists from Thuringia settled in this area, and during the 1960s several new thermometer manufacturers emerged there. Möller Therm, along with TFA Dostmann and others, was part of this network and exchanged expertise within the trade. The company regularly participated in industry fairs and exhibitions — for example, it exhibited at the Ambiente International Trade Fair in Frankfurt (2018) and at Brille & Co (Germany, 2016), presenting magnifiers and meteorological devices.
Möller Therm is also listed as a supplier of promotional and gift products (thermometers and weather stations) in the European PSI Association under supplier code 40892, and appears in official Bavarian trade and export directories, confirming its integration into the regional industrial community and export infrastructure.
Successors and reorganization
The company has never changed its name nor been sold to external owners. The legal successor of the original private enterprise is Möller Therm GmbH — the same structure registered in 1980. All production lines and know-how remained within the firm and were passed down through the Möller family. Thus, no separate successor company was ever created — Möller Therm evolved organically from a private workshop into a GmbH while maintaining continuous operations under its original name. The company remains family-owned and managed, ensuring full production continuity.
Range of instruments (general overview)
Möller Therm manufactured a wide variety of measuring instruments, including:
Present status
The company still exists today under the name Möller-Therm GmbH, retaining its legal form as a limited liability company (GmbH). It remains based in Kreuzwertheim, Germany, and continues to specialize in thermometers and measuring instruments. Möller-Therm GmbH is classified as a small family enterprise, employing around 20–25 people according to the Bayern International Export Catalogue, which also lists its founding year as 1964. The company continues its more than 60-year tradition in precision measurement as an independent family business.
