VERY GOOD
Brass-cased Dutch aneroid barometer circa 1870, signed by the workshop “A. Reballio & Zoon” and marked with the PNHB logo on the back of the case. The case is made of radiant brass with a mirror-like polish and features a hanging ring. The front is adorned with a slim brass bezel that securely holds a thick, flat glass with a faceted edge.
The barometer has an open silvered dial engraved with standard meteorological terms in Dutch at the top. The semicircular barometric scale is calibrated in centimeters of mercury, ranging from 72 cm to 80 cm, and is labeled as “Holosteric Barometer.” A curved thermometer with a centigrade scale and the marking “Centigrade Thermometer,” along with the serial number 31618, is positioned at the bottom. The barometer features a blued steel hand, a brass trend pointer, and a gilded brass reflective ring.
The standard Naudet mechanism is powered by a single but thick 2.5-inch aneroid Vidie capsule with a spring tension system of the C-type.
The company “A. Reballio & Zoon” represents the third generation of a renowned family of barometer makers from the Netherlands, known for their exceptional craftsmanship and high-quality products. The company was officially named in 1840 when Antoni Albertus Martinus Reballio was at the helm alongside his 18-year-old son Angelus Antoni Albertus. Based in Rotterdam at Vissersdijk 21a, the company thrived until Angelus succeeded his father, continuing the business under the same name.
In 1860, the company moved to Vissteeg 111 and became, among other things, the exclusive importer of Eugene Bourdon’s metallic barometers from Paris. Angelus’s son, Albertus Hermanus, born in Rotterdam in 1865, became the last head of the family business in 1904 after his father’s death. He managed the company until its closure in 1925.
