ARTISTIC BAROMETER — “The Cat at the Window”
A cosy Dutch interior, a flower-filled windowsill, a distant church steeple, and a ginger cat keeping a watchful eye on the weather. The cat, naturally, has no intention of going outside to check.
The window does the forecasting. Treated with moisture-sensitive cobalt chloride, the glass changes colour with the humidity: blue promises fine weather, violet suggests a change, and pink warns of rain. As the air dries, the window turns blue again — no batteries, no moving parts, and no need to disturb the cat.
Despite its name, this charming little barometer measures humidity rather than atmospheric pressure. A delightful marriage of vintage illustration and simple chemistry, it is best displayed away from direct sunlight and sources of steam.
