Casartelli Family History Expanded
The history of the Casartelli dynasty of instrument makers has been substantially revised and extended, drawing on new sources.
The updated account traces the family from Tavernerio near Lake Como to Liverpool, Manchester and Salford, covering roughly two centuries, from about 1784 to 1991. It now draws on Tony Benson's Brass and Glass (2nd ed., 2023) and Edwin Banfield's The Italian Influence on English Barometers from 1780 (1993). New material includes:
- the early career of Lewis Anthony Casartelli and his work for John Dalton;
- the firm's registering barometers and barographs, and the traveller's barometer on Watkin's patent;
- the role of Joseph Henry Casartelli in British trade associations during and after the First World War;
- a detailed account of the conflicting dates for the firm's closure. The history also adds a genealogy, a guide to dating instruments by their signatures, and a summary of discrepancies between sources.
