An especially useful photographic postcard showing Holborn Viaduct in London with the premises of Negretti & Zambra clearly visible in their original urban setting.

The importance of the card lies less in its subject as a general London view than in the unusually clear appearance of the company’s shopfront on the left side of the street. The large NEGRETTI & ZAMBRA fascia can be seen at street level, providing direct visual evidence of how one of Britain’s leading scientific-instrument firms presented itself within the commercial landscape of central London.

The image shows Holborn Viaduct during the Edwardian period, with horse-drawn vehicles, early motor traffic, pedestrians, shop awnings, overhead wires and monumental architecture. In this context, Negretti & Zambra appears not as an abstract name from a catalogue or instrument dial, but as a substantial retail presence integrated into one of London’s major commercial thoroughfares.

The reverse confirms that the card was genuinely used and mailed, preserving its original postal history. Together with surviving advertisements bearing the Holborn Viaduct address, the postcard forms a particularly evocative visual record of Negretti & Zambra’s London retail presence in the early twentieth century.
