Handwritten Note from Negretti & Zambra Continentaal B.V.
Cat. No. PC-2026-027
A particularly interesting companion document to the private letter dated 13 August 1974 preserved under catalogue number PRT-2026-026. This note was written only three days earlier and originated not from a private collector, but directly from Negretti & Zambra Continentaal B.V. in Zeist, the Dutch continental branch or associated company of Negretti & Zambra.
The handwritten message was addressed to Mrs. Warners and accompanied documentation concerning the type of barometer she had submitted for identification. The sender explains that the material enclosed constitutes the best documentation then available in English and expresses the hope that it will be of use. The brief text strongly suggests that the Dutch Negretti & Zambra office had been approached for assistance in identifying or researching an older instrument.
This makes the note especially significant within the group. The related letter of 13 August shows Warners-van Veen thanking A. Johansman for “particularly interesting documentation,” mentioning a signed blue brochure and enclosing photographs of the family barometer. The present sheet appears to represent an earlier stage in exactly that exchange, linking the private enquiry directly to Negretti & Zambra’s own Dutch organisation. The document therefore provides rare evidence of how historical instrument enquiries were handled within the company during the 1970s. Rather than merely selling new instrumentation, the Dutch branch evidently retained enough historical knowledge or documentation to assist owners of older Negretti & Zambra barometers with identification.
Taken together, PC-2026-027 and PRT-2026-026 form a small but unusually coherent archival group: a surviving trace of a 1974 attempt to identify and document a historical barometer through correspondence between its owners, a specialist in Zeist, and Negretti & Zambra itself.
