Letter Concerning a Negretti & Zambra Barometer
Cat. No. PС-2026-026
An unusual piece of private correspondence documenting the investigation of a historical Negretti & Zambra barometer in the Netherlands during the 1970s.
The letter was written on 13 August 1974 by J. Warners-van Veen of Rijswijk to A. Johansman of Zeist. Warners-van Veen thanks the recipient for the particularly interesting documentation that had been sent to her and notes that a signed “blue brochure” was presumably intended to be returned. This reference suggests that Johansman had already supplied comparative or historical material in an attempt to identify or explain the barometer.
Of particular interest is the reference to two enclosed photographs of “our barometer.” The writer apologises for their limited clarity and offers to have better photographs made, potentially including photographs of the internal mechanism. This indicates that the correspondence concerned more than a superficial attribution: the construction of the instrument itself was evidently considered important for establishing its identity, date, or history.
The final paragraph emphasizes the personal nature of the enquiry. Warners-van Veen writes that both she and her husband greatly appreciate the effort being made and are very curious to learn Johansman’s opinion. The document therefore preserves a small but revealing example of historical-instrument research before the digital era, when owners, collectors and specialists exchanged photographs, brochures and written observations by post in order to identify surviving instruments.
In combination with the related document preserved in the collection, this letter provides valuable provenance and research context for a Negretti & Zambra instrument and illustrates the informal network through which knowledge of historical barometers circulated among Dutch collectors and enthusiasts in the 1970s.
