A Dutch edition of one of the lesser-known but highly important physics textbooks by the French educator Adolphe Ganot (1804–1887).

This volume is not a translation of Ganot’s famous Traité élémentaire de physique expérimentale et appliquée, first published in 1851. Instead, it derives from his second major textbook, Cours de physique purement expérimentale à l’usage des gens du monde, first issued in Paris in 1859. The latter was intended for readers without advanced mathematical training and presented physics through observation, experiment and apparatus rather than formal analysis.

The Dutch bookselling title is generally given as Handboek der Natuurkunde voor den beschaafden stand, while the present title page uses the simplified designation Volksuitgave. The translation was prepared by Dr. Th. van Doesburgh and published in Rotterdam by H. Nijgh in 1862.

Ganot’s influence on nineteenth-century physics education was immense. His textbooks were translated into numerous languages and circulated throughout Europe and far beyond it, including North America, Australia, India and Japan. Their success rested largely on a clear experimental approach, abundant illustrations and the systematic presentation of scientific instruments as tools for understanding physical laws.

For a collection devoted to meteorological instruments, the book is relevant because Ganot’s textbooks formed part of the educational environment in which instruments such as thermometers, barometers and manometers were encountered by generations of students. They helped transform such devices from specialist laboratory apparatus into standard elements of general scientific education.

The provenance of this particular copy gives it unusual historical depth. It was not merely owned as a reference book but was actively used by two young women training as teachers in Amsterdam at a time when professional opportunities for educated women were still limited. The family recollection that the sisters carried out physics experiments in their kitchen makes the volume a tangible survival from the domestic and educational practice of science in the late nineteenth century.

Its later history is equally evocative. Both sisters moved from teaching into telegraphy, one of the technically skilled occupations increasingly open to women at the time, while Maria Sophia later worked for decades in ophthalmology, where measurement, optics and applied physics remained central to her daily work. The book therefore preserves not only the history of Ganot’s international influence, but also the personal story of how physics education entered the lives and careers of two Dutch women in the closing years of the nineteenth century.

Inscriptions & Annotations

The binding bears the abbreviated gilt spine title “GANOT NATUURKUNDE.” Any internal ownership inscriptions or marginal annotations have not yet been recorded.

Physical Description

Bound nineteenth-century textbook in quarter leather with marbled paper-covered boards. The spine is gilt-lettered “GANOT NATUURKUNDE” and divided by gilt rules. The title page reads “Handboek der Natuurkunde. Volksuitgave”, translated from the French by Dr. Th. van Doesburgh and published in Rotterdam by H. Nijgh in 1862. The volume contains numerous explanatory sections on physical phenomena and experimental apparatus. Exact dimensions and pagination not recorded.

Provenance

The book was acquired in the Netherlands directly from a descendant of the family in which it had been preserved. According to the seller’s family history, the volume was used in the 1890s, and possibly into the first years of the twentieth century, by two sisters, Maria Sophia Mensink and Louise Wilhelmina Mensink, during their studies at the Normaalschool in Amsterdam, a professional teacher-training institution. Their younger sister, Maria Frederika Mensink, later recalled that Maria Sophia and Louise performed physics experiments in the kitchen of the family home near the Nieuwendijk in central Amsterdam. Both women eventually left teaching and became telegraphists with the Dutch P.T.T. Louise Wilhelmina Mensink remained employed at the telegraph office until illness and her death in 1926. Maria Sophia Mensink later changed profession again and became an assistant in the ophthalmological practice of Dr. Meihuizen, where she worked for more than twenty-five years. According to the family account, she independently carried out eye examinations for relatives and determined the required strength of their spectacles, continuing in practice the kind of physical measurement and observational science that had first interested her as a student. She died on 30 May 1941, shortly before her 57th birthday.
