A Story of Temperature Measurement
Cat. No. BOOK-2026-036
A mid-twentieth-century historical and promotional booklet published by Negretti & Zambra and devoted to the development of temperature measurement. Unlike a conventional technical catalogue, A Story of Temperature Measurement presents thermometry through a historical narrative. Its cover visually links early experiments in temperature measurement with the company’s own modern instruments, creating a deliberate continuity between the long history of thermometry and Negretti & Zambra’s contemporary role as a manufacturer of precision measuring equipment. The booklet was issued in 1958 as Publication T/60. At this date Negretti & Zambra described itself not merely as a maker of meteorological instruments but as a broad industrial instrumentation company producing equipment for indicating, recording and controlling temperature, pressure, humidity, volume and flow, as well as meteorological and aircraft instruments. The publication therefore belongs to the post-war period in which the company increasingly emphasized industrial measurement and control alongside its traditional meteorological business. The historical subject was also well suited to the company’s identity. Negretti & Zambra had been involved with thermometers, barometers and related scientific instruments since the nineteenth century, and a booklet tracing the evolution of temperature measurement simultaneously served an educational and corporate purpose. It informed the reader while reinforcing the firm’s association with a long tradition of precision instrumentation. The graphic treatment is especially characteristic of the period. The cover uses a modern two-colour line design superimposed on lightly drawn historical instruments, while the closing page combines the company emblem with a stylized plumb-bob-like motif and a restrained corporate layout. As ephemera, the booklet is useful not only for the history of thermometry but also for understanding how Negretti & Zambra presented its own heritage in the late 1950s: as a modern engineering company rooted in the long development of scientific measurement.
