Advertisement for Radiguet & Massiot Scientific Instruments
Cat. No. AD-2026-028
A compact but highly informative advertisement for Radiguet & Massiot, one of the important Parisian firms active in the manufacture and supply of scientific and educational apparatus around the turn of the twentieth century.
The advertisement is datable to shortly after the Exposition Universelle of 1900, whose awards are used prominently as a mark of prestige: the firm claims four gold medals and two silver medals. This places the notice firmly within the period when international exhibition distinctions were still an important commercial tool for scientific-instrument makers.
The wording also captures a moment of expansion. Radiguet & Massiot announces a “considerable enlargement” of its departments devoted to optics, projection, mechanics, electricity and radiography. The inclusion of radiography is particularly revealing, since X-ray technology had only entered practical use a few years earlier. Its appearance alongside more established branches of scientific apparatus shows how rapidly French instrument makers incorporated new technologies into their commercial programmes. The final line is especially important for company history. It states that the workshops of the Maison Radiguet had been brought together with those of the Maison Molteni, preserving evidence of the relationship between two major Parisian scientific-instrument businesses.
The advertisement was very likely removed from a scientific or technical periodical, and La Nature is a plausible source given the format, typography and intended readership, although the precise issue has not yet been identified. As a piece of trade ephemera, it is valuable for documenting both the commercial expansion of Radiguet & Massiot and the breadth of the scientific technologies the firm was promoting immediately after 1900.

- The advertisement prominently identifies Radiguet & Massiot as manufacturers of scientific instruments and refers to awards received at the Exposition Universelle of 1900. It announces a substantial expansion of the firm’s departments for optics, projection, mechanics, electricity and radiography, gives the addresses 13 and 15 Boulevard des Filles-du-Calvaire, and notes that the Radiguet workshops had been united with those of the Maison Molteni at 44 rue du Château-d’Eau.
Small rectangular black-and-white printed advertisement, apparently cut from a contemporary French periodical. The design is entirely typographic, enclosed within a heavy black border and printed on thin off-white paper. The composition relies on strong contrasts in type size and weight to emphasize the company name, exhibition awards, business expansion, principal product categories and Paris addresses.
The document was purchased from a private seller in France.
