Christmas Presents Advertisement by Negretti & Zambra
Cat. No. AD-2026-023
A particularly attractive late-Victorian advertisement issued by Negretti & Zambra for the Christmas shopping season of 1890. Unlike advertisements devoted to a single scientific instrument, this example presents the firm's entire range of precision apparatus as suitable Christmas presents, revealing how scientific and meteorological instruments were marketed not only as professional equipment but also as desirable objects for the Victorian domestic interior.
The centrepiece is an exceptionally ornate wall-mounted barometer and thermometer combination. Its architectural case, elaborate ornamentation and large circular aneroid dial transform a functional meteorological instrument into a conspicuous decorative object. The choice of such an elaborate model was clearly deliberate: it visually reinforces the advertisement's Christmas-gift theme and demonstrates that Negretti & Zambra could supply instruments intended as much for display and prestige as for practical observation.
The surrounding text shows the extraordinary breadth of the company's retail business. Customers were offered barometers, binoculars, microscopes, telescopes and magic lanterns, while Negretti & Zambra simultaneously advertised a substantial 600-page illustrated catalogue containing approximately 1,200 engravings. The offer of a separate illustrated price list free by post illustrates the importance of mail-order commerce to major scientific-instrument firms by the end of the nineteenth century.
The wording “Scientific Instrument Makers to the Queen” is also significant. By explicitly invoking the royal appointment in a consumer advertisement, Negretti & Zambra used its connection with the Crown as a guarantee of quality and prestige. In the competitive Victorian instrument trade, such a designation was a powerful element of corporate identity.
The addresses printed at the foot of the advertisement — 38 Holborn Viaduct, 45 Cornhill and 122 Regent Street — document the firm's extensive London retail presence at the time. The additional phrase “Photographers at the Crystal Palace” reflects another important branch of Negretti & Zambra's activities and demonstrates the close relationship between scientific instrumentation, optics and photography within the company.
Dated precisely 6 December 1890, the advertisement provides an unusually vivid snapshot of how a leading British scientific-instrument manufacturer presented barometers to the general public at the height of the Victorian period: as precision instruments, decorative furnishings and prestigious Christmas gifts all at once.

Single-sheet black-and-white printed advertisement, evidently removed from a contemporary newspaper or periodical. The tall vertical composition is dominated by a finely engraved illustration of an elaborate wall-mounted combination meteorological instrument incorporating a large aneroid barometer and thermometer. Bold display typography is combined with smaller advertising text arranged around the illustration.
The document was purchased from a private seller in the United Kingdom.
