Binoculars Advertisement by Negretti & Zambra
Cat. No. AD-2026-022
A striking interwar advertisement issued by Negretti & Zambra, one of Britain's best-known manufacturers and retailers of scientific, meteorological and optical instruments.
The advertisement promotes binoculars rather than a single proprietary model, emphasizing instead that “All best makes are in stock.” This wording is significant because it reflects an important aspect of Negretti & Zambra's business: alongside instruments manufactured under its own name, the company also acted as a major London retailer supplying selected products from other makers.
The design is deliberately dynamic. A large photographic image of binoculars is paired with a racing jockey, immediately associating optical magnification with speed, distance and sporting observation. Horse racing was an ideal subject for binocular advertising, since spectators needed compact optical instruments capable of following rapidly moving subjects at considerable distance. The composition therefore communicates the intended use of the product visually, without requiring extensive explanatory text.
The two addresses shown are historically important. 38 Holborn Viaduct was one of Negretti & Zambra's principal London premises and remained associated with the company until the building was destroyed during the Blitz in 1940–1941. The advertisement also gives 122 Regent Street, the prestigious retail address acquired through the business of the instrument maker John Newman and long used by Negretti & Zambra as a central London showroom.
The use of the postal districts E.C.1 and W.1, together with the modern photographic layout and typography, points to an interwar date, most plausibly the 1930s. Negretti & Zambra advertisements of the late 1930s still prominently used the Holborn Viaduct address.
Although devoted to sporting optics rather than meteorology, the advertisement is valuable within a collection of Negretti & Zambra ephemera because it illustrates the remarkable breadth of the firm's commercial activity. By the twentieth century, the company name was associated not only with barometers, thermometers and recording instruments, but also with binoculars, photographic equipment and a wide range of precision optical apparatus.
