Object Overview

This shining watch-size gilt brass case aneroid barometer, dating to around 1915, measures 49mm and is fitted with a suspension ring and a rotating bezel with a flat faceted mineral glass inset. The altitude scale, engraved on a revolving ring inside the bezel, is used by aligning the zero of the scale with the initial reading of the index hand. The revolving altitude scale features graduations up to 10,000 feet, with subdivisions of 100 feet.

The barometric scale, in turn, is engraved on a silvered brass dial and engine-divided into London inches of mercury, ranging from 21 to 31 inches. The weather terms are represented by three designations—RAIN, CHANGE, and FAIR, all inscribed in capital letters. The elegant index hand, crafted from blued steel, is adorned with a crescent-shaped counterweight. A calibration port is located on the back of the case. The barometer is housed in a Morocco leather case with a snap lid, which remains in good condition.
