Object Overview
The Soviet “Utyos” barometer, dating to the late 20th century, combines solid functionality with classic Soviet design. It features a robust beechwood case that adds a warm, natural tone to its appearance. The open metal dial displays dual scales in hectopascals and millimeters of mercury, alongside standard weather indications in Russian, making it both practical and accessible. A brass bezel encircles the dial, holding a flat glass cover with a central brass trend pointer handle, allowing for easy tracking of atmospheric changes.
This model utilizes aviation technology and specialized alloys in the Vidi capsule and the movement that transmits motion to the pointer, ensuring high precision and durability. The operation of this movement is based on the conventional continental cantilever mechanism. The mechanism’s components are solid, with a subtle golden sheen, housed within a brass niche, creating an impression of radiant light emanating from the open dial — almost as if one is peering into an open treasure chest filled with gold.
Additionally, at the bottom of the dial, there is a bimetallic Celsius thermometer with a Celsius scale, enhancing the barometer’s functionality by offering temperature readings as well. This added feature, coupled with the sturdy craftsmanship, makes the Soviet “Utyos” barometer a notable piece that combines aesthetic appeal with scientific precision.
