Rococo Style Aneroid Barometer, circa 1930, signed by Manufacture Française D’armes et Cycles de Saint-Étienne, also known as Manufrance. As the name suggests, this company specialized in the production of firearms and bicycles but also offered a wide range of vintage collectibles, including microscopes and barometers. It was one of the first French retail companies to conduct sales through mail-order catalogs.
The barometer’s 13 cm case is crafted in a classic style using a veneer of African tigerwood, also known as African walnut, which gives it a warm tone and substantial feel. The outer rim is accented with a delicate brass beaded edging that highlights the borders of the case.
At the top of the case, a decorative brass element resembling a ribbon or garland with curls is situated, adding a sense of elegance and lightness. The asymmetrical design with flowing curves brings a touch of Rococo style to the piece. The patina on the brass enhances its antique character.
The 8 cm dial is protected by a brass bezel fitted with thick, flat glass featuring beveled edges, which enhances the depth and expressiveness of the instrument. The bezel frames the central section of the barometer, showcasing an open cardboard dial with visible aneroid capsule and lever mechanism.
A unique detail of this barometer is its dial, which features standard French weather indicators but lacks any scale markings. It is clear that a scale was never intended, as there is no space for it. However, if the barometer is tilted in the light, a faint, ghostly scale in French inches of mercury can be glimpsed on the glass, as if from another dimension. This scale was likely reverse-painted on the glass but has mostly faded over time, leaving only a subtle trace.
The barometer’s mechanism features a construction characteristic of the renowned manufacturer Maxant, who produced this instrument. In the company’s catalog, where this barometer can be found, Maxant describes itself as follows: “The oldest and most important barometer factory in the world.” This claim holds true, as Léon Maxant’s company incorporated several well-known firms, manufacturers, and brands:
