An aneroid hanging barometer with a brass case from the late 19th century by the French manufacturer Lion et Guichard. The barometer features a pristine stamped open dial made of glazed cardboard, measuring 13 centimeters in diameter. At the top of the dial, standard meteorological terms are displayed. The semicircular barometric scale is calibrated in London inches of mercury, ranging from 28" to 31", divided into increments of 1/50 inch, and labeled as "Aneroid Barometer." Below the barometric scale is a semicircular thermometer calibrated in Fahrenheit, with a range from 0° to 140°, marked as “Fahrenheit’s Thermometer.” A blued steel pointer with a deep blue hue glides along the dial. The dial is framed by a reflective gilded brass bezel.
The traditional mechanism is driven by a 7-centimeter single sensitive aneroid capsule with a spring-tensioned C-type spring. The bridge features a rectangular base, and the screws supporting the strong iron carriage, fixed across the chamber, have square blue heads. These mechanical features are also characteristic of the Dubois & Casse brand.
On the back of the barometer is the Lion et Guichard logo, depicting an anchor with the initials L&G at its base, surrounded by a circle within the anchor, symbolizing the aneroid barometer, and inscribed with the word "Barometre." Lion et Guichard was a French manufacturer of aneroid barometers in the second half of the 19th century. They positioned themselves as successors to Lucien Vidie, the inventor of the aneroid barometer in 1844, and operated at 8 Rue Rocroy in Paris, which had previously been Vidie’s workshop. In 1863, Vidie transferred his production and the rights to the term "aneroid" to Breguet. Breguet later sold its clockmaking division to its manager, Mr. Brown, and in 1870, sold the barometer division to Lion et Guichard. The company later operated under the name Guichard for a time before disappearing from the market.
