Object Overview
Here is an example of the Gun Marine barometer — a replica of a late 20th-century instrument, signed Dejoka, Lisbon. This instrument, made in the characteristic shape of Fitzroy’s Marine Barometer, combines both classic design and practicality. The barometer’s body is made of a gleaming brass tube that widens at the top to accommodate the register plates and at the bottom to protect the mercury reservoir. The lower part of the body is equipped with a removable brass base. At the top, a hanging ring is mounted, although it is not the main method for securing the instrument.
The metal register plates, with a scale in London inches of mercury and standard weather indications, are protected by a rounded plastic glass, providing durability while remaining almost an invisible barrier between the mechanism and the outside world. The barometer’s scale is equipped with a vernier, which is operated by a brass handle conveniently located on the right side of the body, just below the gimbal suspension. The gimbal suspension, in turn, ensures the barometer remains stable even in rough conditions, making it especially suitable for use at sea.
