Object Overview

This extremely interesting Dual Indication Barometer by Wilhelm Lambrecht, dating to approximately 1912, features a carved solid oak board with a brass drum-shaped barometer mounted on it. The barometric scale, printed on a cardboard dial in millimeters of mercury, has a unique feature—it is divided into two sections (left and right).

On one side, the scale indicates standard pressure calibrated for sea level. This is confirmed by the inscription on the dial: “Normal Stand für den Meeresspiegel” — meaning “Normal value for sea level.”

On the opposite side, the scale is adapted for local conditions in Gittelde. This helps the user interpret the readings, understanding that “normal pressure” varies depending on altitude. The dial includes the inscription: “Normal Stand für Gittelde” — meaning “Normal value for Gittelde.”

This marking refers to the scale that has been calibrated for the atmospheric pressure typical of the Gittelde region, taking into account its elevation above sea level. Gittelde is situated at approximately 280 meters above sea level, which affects the pressure, as it is lower than at sea level.

Gittelde is the name of a small settlement (village or town) in Germany, located in the state of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) and part of the Göttingen district. Historically, Gittelde was known as a mining town in the Harz region, where extensive ore extraction took place.

To read this dual-scale barometer, a double-sided steel pointer is used. It is blued on one side, giving it a deep blue appearance, while the other side retains its silver-metallic finish.

In addition to the barometer, the case also features a mercury thermometer with a centigrade scale engraved on a porcelain plate. Above the thermometer, a brass manufacturer’s plaque is affixed, providing details about the maker.
