aluminium, brass, glass, iron
This compact mid-20th-century desk aneroid barometer by the renowned German company BARIGO is designed in a geometrically austere form, featuring a square brass case mounted on a heavy rectangular cast-iron base, painted black and framed along the edges with a fine golden line.
The barometer case is made of lacquered brass with a soft golden sheen. The bezel, which holds the square mineral glass with beveled edges, is also brass. The trend indicator hand is crafted from brass and adjusted via a small knurled knob positioned at the center of the glass.
The dial is made of painted aluminum with a satin finish and a radially brushed surface. It features a barometric scale in millimeters of mercury, ranging from 700 to 790 mmHg. The central part bears large German weather inscriptions: REGEN – VERÄNDERLICH – SCHÖN (“rain – changeable – fair”).
The combination of the brass housing and the massive cast-iron base lends the instrument both visual stability and understated elegance, characteristic of mid-century German industrial design.
