Description

This finely engineered Birchwood Case Soviet Barograph, produced in 1953 by the renowned Gidrometpribor plant in Riga, exemplifies mid-century precision instrumentation tailored for hydrometeorological observation. The instrument is housed in a functionalist-style case crafted from solid birch, with glass insets on all four sides allowing optimal light entry for effortless chart reading.

The hinged top lid is fitted with a metal handle and secured by dual side latches. The base is supported by four solid rubber feet, ensuring stability during operation. Inside rests a robust black-lacquered brass mounting plate bearing the recording mechanism.

At the heart of the device is a seven-day mechanical drum constructed from durable plastic, accompanied by a quartet of large aneroid capsules. These capsules drive a finely balanced system of amplification levers, culminating in a precision recording pen.

The pen itself is V-shaped and mounted on an ultralight lever, terminating in a gate suspension — a two-point bearing with a subtle inclination. This ingenious detail causes the pen arm to pivot inward under gravitational force, thereby regulating pen pressure not by spring tension, but by the natural weight of the lever. The angle of this suspension can be finely adjusted to minimize friction and ensure smooth contact with the recording paper.

A calibration port is built into the base, allowing precise zeroing of the pen using a square-section adjustment key. The top lid bears a finely engraved brass plaque featuring the manufacturer’s logo, production number, and year of issue — a hallmark of the Gidrometpribor factory’s commitment to utility and craftsmanship.
