This mid-20th-century Wetterhäuschen by the German brand Joggili is a decorative hygrometer designed in the form of a wooden alpine chalet. The chalet features a classic shape with a gabled roof adorned with a pattern resembling shingles. The exterior walls are decorated with vertical wooden slats and window shutters painted red with heart-shaped cutouts. Below the window, a decorative garland made of greenery and red berries adds charm to the design. Inside the openings of the house, there are two plastic figures: on the left, a man wearing a black coat and a red vest, holding a small umbrella in his left hand, and on the right, a woman dressed in traditional attire with a red hat. At the front of the chalet, two plastic deer figures—a doe and a fawn—are positioned on a green plastic base designed to imitate grass and flowers. Small decorative plastic fir trees are placed on either side of the house. At the center, a thermometer is mounted on a cardboard backing, which displays temperature in both Fahrenheit and Celsius, with clearly printed scales for each. A bright yellow plastic adjustment knob resembling a chimney protrudes from the roof and allows fine-tuning of the mechanism.
The weather house operates based on changes in humidity using a hygroscopic element inside, typically a synthetic string or animal gut. This element expands or contracts depending on the humidity level, triggering a mechanism that rotates the figures. When the air is humid, the man holding the umbrella steps outside to signal rainy or wet weather, while during dry conditions, the woman in her traditional dress emerges instead. Despite its plastic figurines, the wooden construction of the chalet gives it an authentic and rustic appearance, while the simple yet effective mechanism offers a charming way to predict weather changes. On the back of the house, detailed user instructions are printed, offering guidance on proper use and maintenance of the Wetterhäuschen.
