This Rack-and-pinion desk barometer, dating to approximately 1880, was crafted by the renowned clockmaker Antoine Redier. This is the same Redier to whom the inventor of the aneroid barometer, Lucien Vidie, ordered a hundred of his very first instruments in 1845. However, the instruments turned out to be unsatisfactory, leading Vidie to reject the delivery. Redier sued him and received compensation.

The drum-shaped brass case of this barometer, gracefully resting on two miniature legs, is additionally equipped with a suspension ring. The grand stepped open dial captivates the eye with its elegance. The dial is made of two discs of dense cardboard, separated by a thin brass insert.

On the outer ring, the standard weather indication text is presented in German, along with the instrument’s name — Aneroid Barometer. The inner ring features two barometric scales: one in centimeters of mercury, and the other in Parisian inches of mercury, divided into 22 lines within the 26 to 30 inches range.

At the bottom of the dial, the famous Redier logo is displayed — the intricately arranged letters of his name, “ARED.”

The open dial offers a glimpse into the instrument’s interior, revealing the conventional continentale cantilever type movement, crafted from shining brass, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship of its era.
