This mid 19th-century flame-mahogany stick barometer captivates with its striking texture and the extraordinary grain of the wood. The pine case is veneered with mahogany, while the broken pediment and hemispherical top are crafted from solid mahogany. The pediment is crowned with a brass urn-shaped finial.
The register plates are made of silvered brass. The right plate features a barometric scale in London inches of mercury, divided into tenths, along with standard weather indication text. The manual vernier scale is also located here. The left register plate houses a mercury thermometer calibrated in Fahrenheit with characteristic heat text indication.
Along the body of the barometer runs the barometric tube with a boxwood cistern featuring a leather bottom. The built-in ivory handle at the bottom of the case allows for adjusting the volume of the cistern by pressing the leather bottom, which restricts the flow of mercury — a necessary feature for safely transporting the instrument. The top of the tube is protected by a decorative brass cap.
