T. Wheeler Scientific Instruments Ltd

T. Wheeler Scientific Instruments Ltd, based in London, was a prominent British manufacturer of precision instruments, notably producing compensated aneroid barometers during the early to mid-20th century. These barometers were designed for both meteorological and military applications.

In the 1930s, the company produced compensated barometers marked in inches from 24 to 31, capable of measuring atmospheric pressure up to 6,000 feet. These instruments were engineered to remain unaffected by temperature variations, ensuring accurate readings in diverse environmental conditions.

During the 1940s, T. Wheeler Scientific Instruments Ltd supplied the British military with surveying aneroid barometers. For instance, a 1940 model is marked ‘Compensated, T. Wheeler Scientific Insts Ltd, London, B.778, 1940’ and features a brass case with the military broad arrow mark, indicating official military use.

Additionally, the company produced aneroid barometers for the Meteorological Office. A 1940 Mark I model, compensated for temperature, is marked with the Meteorological Office number 11450/50 and includes scales in both inches and millibars. This portable design was intended for use in locations where mercury station barometers were impractical.

The precision and reliability of T. Wheeler’s instruments made them valuable tools for both military operations and meteorological observations during that era.
