Henri Morin founded the company Ateliers H. Morin around 1880 in Paris. The company quickly became one of the leading French manufacturers of drafting, surveying, and artillery instruments. H. Morin specialized in producing a variety of scientific and measuring tools. The company offered a wide range of instruments, including theodolites, levels, compasses, barometers, and other devices for surveying and engineering work.
Their barometers were renowned for their high quality and precision, making them popular among engineers, researchers, and other professionals of the time.
In 1886, Morin formed a partnership with E. Gensse, and the firm was named H. Morin & Gensse. In the catalogues of that time, it was described as “Ateliers annexes” (auxiliary workshops), suggesting a limited scope of the partnership’s activities. The partnership was dissolved by 1893.
By 1930, when a printing division had been added to the office equipment section, the company, now known as Etablissements H. Morin, was managed by Georges Boyelle-Morin, a 1909 graduate of the Engineering program at the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers. In 1930, he also held the position of President of the Chambre syndicale des Constructeurs d’Instruments de Précision (Union Chamber of Precision Instrument Manufacturers). He was joined by Paul Beau, a graduate of the École Polytechnique, as a co-director (or co-owner).
Before 1964, when a patent was registered under the name Morin, Secretan & Cie, the Morin company had acquired the firm Secretan, which at the time was owned by the Legros family and based in Cachan. In this same town, Morin-Secretan later merged with the company Serpi.
